
In mid-2024, Paula and Ramiro—the team behind Retype Foundry—decided to start a separate company to market display typefaces that didn’t fit the parameters they had established for their catalog, which focuses on serious type families for corporate and editorial use.
Europe has a rich tradition of monumental and architectural lettering, only a small fraction of which has been adapted for typographic use. To honor this legacy, they launched a collection of fonts inspired by that heritage.
To narrow the focus and ensure aesthetic coherence within the library, the collection centers on avant-garde alphabets created by architects, artisans, and designers during the interwar period of the 20th century.
Brutal Types is the result of dedicated research, documentation, and type design—created to offer designers and branding agencies a diverse selection of typefaces full of character and originality.
