Antonius
Antonius is a Deco-style display typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza, inspired by the distinctive lettering of Dutch graphic designer Anton Kurvers (1889–1940). Active in the 1920s and ’30s, Kurvers created a number of striking book covers featuring bold, geometric letterforms that reflect both the decorative richness and expressive eloquence of the period. Editions such as Menschen op het Tooneel and De Meesters en het Pad showcase his unique typographic voice, which stood out for its angular elegance and expressive simplicity.
With Antonius, Espinoza has revived and expanded these letterforms into a complete typeface that captures Kurvers’ distinctive balance of ornament and function. Its narrow proportions, sculptural terminals, and rhythmic spacing make it ideal for editorial headlines, book design, websites, signage, packaging, and identity systems that call for a refined historical touch.
More than a tribute, Antonius reimagines the typographic sensibility of a designer who left a quiet but lasting mark on Dutch visual culture.
