Brinkhuis
Brinkhuis is a distinctive display typeface designed by Paula Mastrangelo, inspired by the geometric, modular lettering found on several facades in Betondorp—Amsterdam’s iconic “Concrete Village” located in Watergraafsmeer. Built in the 1920s as a model of affordable, modern housing, Betondorp reflects the rationalist ideals of the Dutch avant-garde. The original lettering, likely designed by architect Dick Greiner, features a striking and unconventional Deco style—bold, angular, and full of character—that sets it apart from more common architectural alphabets of the period.
With Brinkhuis, Mastrangelo revives and expands these letterforms into a complete typeface that captures the neighborhood’s understated modernism and expressive typographic flair. Its clean lines, squared forms, and sturdy rhythm make it ideal for signage, editorial use, and identity work with a historical or architectural edge.
Rooted in a site rich with cultural history—Betondorp is also the birthplace of football legend Johan Cruyff—Brinkhuis brings a piece of Amsterdam’s social and design heritage into the digital age.
