Edisonplein
Edisonplein is a display typeface designed by Paula Mastrangelo and Ramiro Espinoza, inspired by the lettering at the entrance of the former “Gemeenteschool J. voor GLO,” a Dutch public school located at Edisonplein 20–46 in Schiedam, the Netherlands. The original façade inscription reveals a distinctive blend of subtle Art Nouveau inflections and geometric, modular construction.
Mastrangelo and Espinoza examined the proportions, stroke modulation, and underlying system of the historic letters, translating these characteristics into a contemporary digital typeface. Rather than replicating the inscription verbatim, they refined its geometry, corrected irregularities, and expanded the character set for present-day applications, while preserving the interplay between decorative nuance and structural clarity that defines the source.
Edisonplein is well suited for labels, posters, packaging, branding, signage, websites, and cultural projects that benefit from a typographic voice balancing expressive detail with technical discipline. Rooted in early twentieth-century façade lettering, it bridges ornamental tradition and modular modernity in a versatile, contemporary form.
