Emmahuis
Emmahuis is an expanded, modular sans typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza, inspired by the distinctive lettering found at the entrance of the Emmahuis building at Schiekade 47, Rotterdam. This building was originally designed by the architecture firm P. Hooykaas & M. Lockhorst in the late 1920s and completed in 1932. Its lettering, probably designed by the same architects, exemplifies the sober, functional style of Dutch modernism, combining clarity with technical precision.
Espinoza carefully studied the original inscription’s geometric forms and modular construction to create Emmahuis, a typeface that balances strong presence with refined simplicity. Its expanded proportions and well-defined structure make it perfect for headlines, signage, branding, and any project seeking a contemporary take on historical architectural letterform.
More than a mere revival, Emmahuis reinterprets a piece of Rotterdam’s architectural heritage, translating its spirit into a versatile digital font. Now available through Brutal Types, Emmahuis invites designers to connect with a rich tradition of Dutch architecture through contemporary typography.
