Gedenk
Gedenk is a squarish, modular sans typeface designed by Paula Mastrangelo, inspired by the carved inscription on the black stone plaque at Rozengracht 229–231 in Amsterdam. The building, designed by architect Dick Greiner, features striking letterforms that echo the ruler-based lettering systems of J.L.M. Lauweriks and H. Wijdeveld—two key figures in the Dutch modernist movement.
With its rigid geometry, modular construction, and rhythmic repetition, the original inscription embodies the formal precision and geometric idealism that defined early 20th-century Dutch architecture. In Gedenk, Mastrangelo has reimagined that spirit as a complete typeface—bold, structured, and rich with historical resonance.
Ideal for logos, brochures, websites, and identity work, Gedenk is a valuable graphic asset that can feel either vintage or futuristic, depending on the context in which it’s used. It’s a tribute to an often-overlooked corner of Dutch design history, where architecture, mysticism, and typography converge. Now available through Brutal Types.
