Joop
Joop is a distinctive display typeface inspired by the expressive lettering carved by sculptor Theo Vos (1887–1948) into the tombstone of Josephine van den Nieuwenhuijsen (1909–1927), located in the serene St. Petrus Banden Cemetery in The Hague. Rooted in the visual language of the Amsterdamse School, the original letterforms are idiosyncratic and imaginative—radiating a sense of solemn beauty and emotional intensity.
Digitally interpreted and expanded by Ramiro Espinoza, Joop brings these hand-carved characters into the digital age with care and respect for their unique voice. Its sculptural presence, unconventional proportions, and rhythmic tension make it a striking choice for posters, signage, websites, album covers, and cultural projects seeking historical depth with an expressive edge.
