Kanela
Kanela is a distinctive display typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza, inspired by a lettering style found on the tomb of the Canela family in the historic Poblenou Cemetery in Barcelona. The original inscription, made of metal letters embedded into stone, stands as a powerful example of expressive funerary lettering—both elegant and unconventional, with subtle Art Nouveau influences.
With Kanela, Espinoza has transformed this unique typographic detail into a complete and usable typeface. Its reversed contrast, sturdy shapes, and slightly condensed forms give it a sculptural presence that’s ideal for signage, packaging, and visual identities that call for strong personality with historical depth.
Far from a nostalgic revival, Kanela reinterprets a moment of forgotten craftsmanship, channeling the atmosphere of Barcelona’s rich graphic past into a contemporary tool for unconventional design. Now available through Brutal Types.
