Kursus
Kursus is a neo-constructivist display typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza, inspired by the geometric and curve-free lettering of Dutch designer and architect Mathieu Lauweriks (1864–1932). Drawing from letterforms found on business cards and an invitation to an exhibition of the Staatliche Handfertigkeitskursus in Hagen, Kursus channels the modular, rational spirit of Lauweriks’ typographic experiments. With its radical use of simple shapes, blocks, and minimalist attitude, the typeface offers a fair reinterpretation of early modernist ideals. Lauweriks’ systematic approach to design left a deep mark on Dutch visual culture. His influence can be traced in the work of Hendrik Wijdeveld for Wendingen magazine, and in the architectural lettering of buildings like the Telegraaf headquarters in Amsterdam, designed by Frits Staal and Gerard Langhout.
Espinoza’s Kursus pays homage to this lineage with a typeface that is as rigorous as it is expressive—ideal for projects where historical depth meets avant-garde flair.
