Midwestern
Midwestern is a modular, blockish display typeface based on the distinctive lettering created by Jochem Ruijgrok in 2018 for the façade of the community center Midwest in Amsterdam, located at Cabralstraat 1. The building itself—constructed in 1924 and designed by the Office of Public Works of the Municipality of Amsterdam—reflects architectural influences of the Amsterdam School.
Ramiro Espinoza developed Midwestern as a typographic interpretation of these façade letters, expanding the character set while preserving their sturdy modular logic. The typeface maintains the original’s compact rhythm and carved quality, making it a useful tool for designers seeking a bold, architectural typographic voice. Midwestern performs well in posters, signage, visual identities, websites, packaging, and editorial work where a solid, geometric tone is required.
