Mossel
Mossel is a Deco-style display typeface designed by Fabian Kolar and released through Brutal Types. Its inspiration comes from the vintage lettering found above the entrance of Café Steijn, located at Nieuwe Binnenweg 345B in Rotterdam. With its sleek curves and geometric flair, the sign is a rare example of interwar commercial lettering that has withstood the test of time.
When invited to collaborate with Brutal Types, Fabian was given access to the foundry’s archive of vernacular Dutch signage. Among the many gems, it was the photograph of Café Steijn’s façade that immediately captured his attention.
With Mossel, Kolar has transformed this overlooked piece of visual heritage into a contemporary typeface that’s ideal for editorial use, signage, and branding projects seeking a dose of historical elegance and character. This new typeface features numerous characteristics that set it apart from the more commonly used typefaces in this genre, offering designers a fresh yet authentically rooted alternative within the Deco tradition.
