Information

Nassau is a display typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza and inspired by the lettering on the façade of the Jan van Nassauschool (now Flex College), located at Gouwestraat 13 in The Hague, the Netherlands. The school building, designed by municipal architects P. Kuyk and J. A. Nijhoff, was inaugurated in September 1923. The original inscription is modular and based on geometric principles, yet it also displays unusual characteristics, including soft curves and a subtle organic quality that distinguish it from the more rigid architectural lettering of its period. This combination gives the alphabet a distinctive balance between structural precision and visual warmth.
Espinoza studied the proportions, construction, and unique details of the original lettering and translated these qualities into a contemporary digital typeface. Rather than reproducing the inscription literally, he refined the geometry, improved consistency, and expanded the character set for present-day typographic use while preserving the modular logic and expressive character of the source.
With its geometric foundation, restrained organic forms, and architectural presence, Nassau is well suited for logos, signage, editorial design, posters, branding, websites, museum exhibitions, and cultural projects that benefit from a refined, historically informed typographic voice. Rooted in Dutch architectural lettering of the interwar period, the typeface brings the formal discipline and distinctive character of its source into contemporary graphic design.
