Nelita
Nelita is a sans serif typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza and inspired by the technical-looking lettering used in vintage enamel advertising for the Dutch coffee brand Van Nelle. Rather than following a single standardized alphabet, Van Nelle’s historical advertising featured lettering that was freely adapted to the proportions and requirements of each sign, advertisement, or package. This resulted in a varied but recognizable typographic language.
Espinoza studied the best examples of this lettering, focusing on its proportions, construction, and practical approach to composition. He translated these characteristics into a contemporary digital typeface, refining the forms and establishing a consistent system while retaining the functional, slightly industrial appearance of the original material.
With its straightforward construction and austere character, Nelita is well suited for branding, packaging, posters, signage, editorial design, websites, and advertising. It is particularly effective for projects related to food, retail, manufacturing, transportation, and technology, as well as designs that draw on the visual language of early twentieth-century Dutch commercial graphics.
