Piet
Piet is a font based on an alphabet model drawn by Piet Zwart (1885–1977) and used in several of his designs. It appears in the poster he produced for the Vickers House company in The Hague, as well as in the beautiful ceramic lettering of two works by Berlage (in whose studio Zwart worked): the building of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and the column and memorial stone at the Buitenhof, both also located in The Hague.
Ramiro Espinoza fell in love with these letters while studying at Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and, in 2024, while planning the Brutal Types collection, decided it was time to produce a digital revival.
In Piet, numerous aspects of the original model had to be corrected to adapt it to the digital and graphic environment. However, the identity and charm of the original letters were always preserved, as it was clear that they represent an important part of Dutch design heritage.
