Spoorweg
Spoorweg is a display typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza and inspired by the lettering on the façade of the former Reisbureau der Staatsspoorwegen, located at Dam 8 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The building was designed by architect K. P. C. de Bazel and completed in 1912. Its original inscription follows a carefully constructed geometric system, showing clear affinities with Mathieu Lauweriks' Quadratuuralfabet, in which letterforms are derived from proportional grids and geometric relationships.
Espinoza studied the proportions, structural logic, and distinctive details of the façade lettering and translated these principles into a contemporary digital typeface. Rather than reproducing the inscription literally, he refined the geometry, regularized the construction, and expanded the character set for contemporary typographic use while preserving the architectural character and subtle incised quality of the original design.
With its geometric structure and restrained elegance, Spoorweg is well suited for signage, editorial design, posters, branding, museum exhibitions, websites, and cultural projects that benefit from a refined and historically informed typographic voice. Rooted in early twentieth-century Dutch architectural lettering, the typeface brings the principles of geometric construction into contemporary graphic design.
