Weng
Weng is a display typeface designed by Jolana Sýkorová, inspired by the a lettering on the cover of the September 1920 edition of Wendingen, the influential Dutch architecture and art magazine associated with the Amsterdam School. The cover—a woodcut by sculptor and architect H.A. van den Eijnde—is a good example of expressive, architectonic typography where letterforms feel carved rather than drawn, reflecting the sculptural spirit of the movement.
With Weng, Sýkorová translates this modest lettering into a functional digital typeface while preserving its angular tension, ornamental structure, and rhythmic density. The result is a bold and evocative typeface ideal for posters, museum publications, websites and visual identities that seek to channel the experimental energy of early 20th-century modernism.
More than a revival, Weng is a fresh new font that pays tribute to the rich typographic imagination of the Amsterdam School and to Wendingen’s enduring legacy as a platform for radical design.
