Winkel
Winkel is a striking display typeface designed by Ramiro Espinoza, inspired by the distinctive lettering found on the black stone plaques that commemorate the 1929 expansion of the Passage, The Hague’s historic commercial gallery. The original letterforms—bold, angular, and slightly eccentric—bear the unmistakable influence of the Amsterdamse School and Art Deco, styles that shaped much of Dutch architecture and design in the early 20th century.
Espinoza has carefully studied and reinterpreted these characters, preserving their sculptural rhythm and expressive geometry while extending them into a complete and versatile typeface. Winkel captures the tension between functionality and ornament that defined the era’s public lettering, making it ideal for brochures, posters, websites, and branding that calls for a touch of historical character with a modern edge.
With Winkel, a forgotten detail of The Hague’s architectural heritage is revived and reimagined for contemporary design.
