Bioskoop Scores at Johan Neeskens Sportpark

When Studio Wesseling was commissioned to develop the identity for the newly renamed Johan Neeskens Sportpark in Heemstede, they chose Bioskoop, a typeface from the Brutal Types collection, as the project’s primary typographic voice. The result is a striking identity system that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in Dutch visual culture.

The Bioskoop typeface is inspired by the lettering found on the façade of the abandoned Cinema Palace, located in Maastricht. Like many typefaces in the Brutal Types collection, it revives a forgotten vernacular alphabet that once shaped the streetscape of the Netherlands. Rather than treating historical lettering as a nostalgic curiosity, Studio Wesseling demonstrates how these overlooked typographic traditions can become powerful tools for contemporary branding.

The Johan Neeskens Sportpark identity is an excellent example of why vernacular letterforms deserve a place in today’s design practice. By drawing on a locally rooted typographic language instead of generic display fonts, the project gains a distinctive character that feels authentic to its cultural context. The typography doesn’t simply decorate the identity—it reinforces a sense of place, history, and continuity.

For us, this is one of the most rewarding aspects of reviving historical alphabets. These letterforms were created for real buildings, streets, and communities. Decades later, they can once again contribute to public life, this time as part of contemporary visual identities. Projects such as Johan Neeskens Sportpark prove that font revivals are not about “recreating the past,” but about giving remarkable alphabets a new purpose in the present.
