Aktie is a display typeface designed by Paula Mastrangelo and Ramiro Espinoza, inspired by the alphabet created by Dutch designer Anton Kurvers (1889–1940) for the architecture book series Moderneschoonheid, published by Kosmos Uitgevers in Amsterdam between 1931 and 1933. Emerging within the context of interwar modernism, Kurvers’ lettering presents a light, elegant, Deco-inflected approach defined by careful proportioning and distinctive letterforms. The alphabet combines clarity with unconventional shapes, reflecting the commercial yet experimental character of early twentieth-century Dutch design.
Aktie is the fifth installment in the Kurvers’ Font Collection, a series by the Brutal Types team dedicated to developing digital typefaces based on Kurvers’ most distinctive lettering alphabets. Previous releases in the collection include Kurversbrug, Omslag, Antonius, and Misiva.
Mastrangelo and Espinoza analyzed the structural principles and formal nuances of the original characters and translated them into a contemporary digital typeface. Rather than creating a strict facsimile, they refined the geometry, regularized spacing, and expanded the character set to meet current typographic standards, while preserving the identity and constructive logic of the source.
Aktie is well suited for book covers, film titles, posters, editorial design, exhibitions, packaging, websites, branding, and cultural projects that call for a modernist typographic voice grounded in historical research and systematic design thinking.
